Dogs and COVID-19: The Do's and Don'ts in This New Normal

White dog wear a protective mask
The majority of the cities around the country and the rest of the world are slowly opening up after months of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As we face the new normal, there are certain changes in our lifestyles and habits that we must make to keep us and the people around us safe from the virus. The same goes for our pet dogs. As dog moms and dads, we must also help our fur babies transition to the post-quarantine world and still keep them protected from any sicknesses.

Here are some do's and don'ts to remember as we now live in the new normal:

DO: Walk your dog safely

Walking your dog remains one of the best ways to keep them physically fit. Moreover, it is also an excellent way for you to exercise and breathe in some fresh air. As a safety precaution, you may want to wear a mask or any facial covering when you step outside. Practicing social distancing in public is still recommended, as well. Disinfecting your hands and changing your clothes once you get home are also recommended. You can also give your dog a quick rinse at home.

DON'T: Wear dog masks

While wearing masks are considered a safe option to protect ourselves from getting infected, dogs don't need one. Making your dog wear masks, even if it says it is for dogs, can lead to difficulty in breathing and suffocation. However, you can be mindful of what your dog sniffs or licks once you are outside.

DO: Shower them with cuddles and kisses

Being in a pandemic does not mean we have to love our dogs less. Showering them with cuddles and kisses calms them, and you, as well. Studies show that being around pets has a positive effect on our mental health. Especially in these times of uncertainty, they need our hugs more than ever.

DON'T: But not when you are showing symptoms

Most of the animals who have tested positive for the virus have been exposed to a human who eventually tested positive, as well, so we very well know that humans can pass the virus to pets. Avoid petting or cuddling your dogs if you are showing symptoms of COVID-19, or if you find out that you are infected to keep your pets safe from the virus. If possible, you can let other people in your household take care of them or have them taken care of by a trustworthy friend or neighbor. If there are no other options for their care, limit your interaction with your pets as much as possible until you have been cleared.

DO: Wash your hands before and after petting them

Since we know that pets can get infected with COVID-19, it is best to always wash your hands before petting them, especially if you just got home. After petting them, don't forget to wash your hands, as well. Regular handwashing is one of the World Health Organization's recommendations as a way to protect yourself from COVID-19.

DON'T: Neglect their hygiene

Just because the can get infected doesn't mean that we have to neglect their hygiene. Regular baths are still a must, and keeping our dogs clean can also protect them from the virus, especially if they spend time in your backyard or porch.

If you need help with your dog's hygiene and grooming, Dog Wash North Brisbane is here to help! We offer professional dog grooming and baths with TLC to ensure that your furry babes are spic-and-span from their heads down to their doggy paws.

Keeping ourselves safe from the threats of COVID-19 is still an utmost concern for most of us. It is our responsibility to keep our doggy friends protected, and these measures can help in making sure they are healthy and safe.
